4C41 LBSCR 54ft TRI-COMPOSITE
LBSCR Diagram 92 S.R. Diagram 335 Nos 6096 - 6160

Part of the programme for putting pairs of six wheeler bodies on new 54ft underframes, these vehicles were built between 1907 and 1910. The LBSCR had many three car sets formed 4C40 / 4C41 / 4C40. They were used on all types of service, except inner suburban, all over the Brighton system. Once the S.R. had converted them to vacuum braking and removed the duckets they appeared all over the system. Withdrawal commenced in 1932 and was complete on the mainland in 1940, apart from departmental vehicles. Four composites went to the Isle of Wight in 1938/39 and the last of these was withdrawn in 1959.

The nine compartment thirds were of three types, Diagram 171 were 1910 rebuilds, Diagram 198 were all new in two batches 1910 - 1913 and 1921. Another seven were built from brake thirds in 1936 / 37 for the Isle of Wight. Between 1942 and 25 a few were paired with push-pull coaches, otherwise none went into sets. In 1925 / 26 all the Diagram 171 / 198 coaches were modified for use as 2 car trailer sets to run between 3 SUB electric units. The electric trailers were withdrawn in 1947 / 48, except for some that became de-icing trailers and were withdrawn in 1961 / 62. The Isle of Wight rebuilds lasted till 1966 at the end of steam and No 2416 is preserved at Haven Street.

4C45 LBSCR PUSH-PULL TRAILER THIRD
S.R. Diagram 79
Kit 4C44 is for the diagram 109 Push-Pull Composite of 1909 of which ten were built. During Brighton days they ran as single cars, or as 'sandwich' , one either side of the loco on branch and local services. Motive power was Terrier 0-6-0T or D1 0-4-2T, later D3, H or M7 0-4-4T were used.
Between 1924 and 1925 S.R. coupled them briefly to Diagram 198 Thirds before these went into electric sets. They were replaced by a mixture of LSWR 48ft Thirds (4C3) and LBSCR 48ft Thirds and the push-pulls were converted to vacuum braking. In 1931 / 1932 the 48ft trailers were withdrawn and replaced by 54ft Trailers converted from LBSCR overhead electric driving trailers (Kit 4C45).
These car units appeared all over S.R., but particularly in the ex. LBSCR and SECR areas. The first set was withdrawn in 1938 but the last ran until 1959.
