LBSCR STROUDLEY COACHES
Price List

Between 1871 and 1891 large quantities of standard four and six coaches were built to the designs of William Stroudley. They replaced a very mixed fleet of older vehicles. Amongst the first built were close coupled suburban sets, the thirds and brake thirds of which had low seat backs, no long partitions and long side windows. Later versions were built with full partitions and separate quarter lights. As well as the suburban sets many identical coaches were built for mainline services with conventional, long buffers. The six wheel first and the two full brakes only appeared in this form.

Braking developed from hand operated wooden brake blocks on the brake vehicles only, to the very effective Westinghouse air brake. Early coaches were oil lit, later some gas lit and finally some were converted to electric lighting. The suspension and running gear also underwent modifications. Most important variations are included in the kit.

Standard Stroudley coaches appeared in all types of train formation, but gravitated towards branchline and secondary services. Withdrawal commenced at the turn of the 20th century and most had gone before grouping. A few survived until the early 1920's and many went to Engineers use such as Mess &Tool Vans and the famous 'Lancing Belle' worksman train. In 1924 eight were transferred to the Isle of White and formed into two sets, finally being withdrawn in 1930.

D34 were in suburban sets with short buffers, D45 were main line with long buffers. All later became D147 with long buffers. Modelled as later type with seperate quarterlights, the earlier version can be made by a simple modification. Four sent to the Isle of Wight.
Also Available in 7mm 'O' Gauge as 7C61

All with identical bodies, D33 were close couple thirds, D44 main line thirds, and D32 close couple seconds. All later became long buffered thirds. Again modelled as later type. Nine in Lancing Works train and two sent to the Isle of Wight.
