These coaches were built in 1907 for through services to the Midland Railway and thus were 1st/3rd class only. In fact they were used indiscriminately on all through services, often in pairs. In the 1930's they were in three or four car sets and ended in 1959 on corridor sets in 'blood and custard' livery.

Sixty six coaches built in three batches in1900/1901/1906 by Metropolitan R.C.W. Oldburys and the SECR. Once more being intended for main line use they appeared on all types of train until 1928. During this year all but 16 were converted as trailer 3rds to run in pairs with ex LSWR bodied thirds between two 3-SUB electric units. The 'non-electrified' coaches seem to have survived untill the 1950s.

Thirty coaches were built in 1903 / 1904 for general mainline service. Five of the 1904 batch were trimmed as 1st / 2nd composites but were later reclassified as all 1st's. A few appeared in long sets but most appeared as loose vehicles. The last was withdran by B.R. in 1956.

Fifty coaches built in 1900 in two batches by Brown Marshalls and Metropolitan R.C.W.Co. Many were upgraded to all 1st and many survived onto B.R. in the 1950's.

4A254 S.R. MAUNSELL 58ft UNDERFRAME

Twelve coaches built in 1900 by the Metropolitan R.C.W.Co., again for main line use. The S.R. used many in boat trains, but later nearly all were demoted to all third. Withdrawn in the early 1950's.

The basic underframe for all Maunsell 58ft steam hauled stock built up to 1936. Later vehicles had modified battery boxes. Includes milled brass angle for trussing and bogies. Upgrades many existing kits of Maunsell stock.
