During 1935 and 1936 the Southern Railway rebuilt many of the old ex LSWR 48ft non-corridor stock on new 58ft underframes, splicing in bits of other coaches or building new guards' vans. Many were formed into various 2 car sets with 56ft LSWR coaches for branch services, one batch were the centre coaches of 3 car semi fast and cross country sets and the balance were loose coaches used all over the S.R. system to make up trains as required.
